MORE THAN 1 MILLION LITRES OF DIESEL FUEL SAVED EVERY YEAR THANKS TO THE DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY OF ELECTRO POWER SYSTEMS (AcT)

Launch of the second phase of the most innovative power plant in Africa, which, by storing energy, enables intermittent renewable sources to be transformed into a stable power source.

Milan, 29 July 2016 – Electro Power Systems Group (EPS), a pioneer in the technology of clean energy storage solutions, sealed a the deal with the National Energy Corporation of Somalia (NECSOM) to expand its power plant. This new order was signed less than five months after launching the first step toward a Hybrid Power Plant in Garowe, capital of Somalia's Puntland state. Thanks to the Hybrid Energy Storage System (HyESS) technology, EPS will enable integration of wind turbines and, thanks to energy storage, will transform them into a stable energy source, thus reducing emissions and cutting electricity bills.

Adding the new HyESS will stabilize the micro-grid, which is powering more than 100,000 people, and will save more than 1 million litres of diesel fuel per year, preventing 600 tons CO2 emissions per year.

The first step toward this innovative Hybrid Power Plant commissioned by EPS in Somalia in February 2016, has provided Garowe's residents with clean energy, cutting their electricity bills by 17% and giving them a more reliable energy supply. This has resulted in more electricity use and an increase in daily peak power to 1.7 MW.

To satisfy this higher demand, NECSOM appointed Elvi Energy, the systems integration division of the EPS Group, to expand the power plant with an additional HyESS that has a 500 kW power conversion system, powered by 450 kW coming from wind turbines, and 313 kWh of energy storage, both fully integrated into the micro-grid originally powered by diesel generators only.

This deal with NECSOM confirms the credibility of the Group technology and at the same time will position the African utility as one of the most innovative energy players worldwide, with whom we are proud to partner. The power plant in Garowe is just a first step toward renewable energy sources in the African energy transition, and we will be an active pioneer on this process, thanks to our capacity to integrate the hydrogen-storage module in our hybrid systems, potentially reducing to zero the diesel consumption in emerging economies” ‒ says Gabriele Marchegiani, Group Senior Vice President.

This further extension of our grid is possible thanks to the reliability demonstrated in-field by the EPS Group systems, and it opens the doors to new joint projects enhancing the energy transition in Africa, in which we would like to be the leading energy player” ‒ says Abdifatah Mohamed Abdi, Chairman of NECSOM.

The EPC agreement will be signed in the next few weeks, and installation and commissioning are scheduled for March 2017.

About
Electro Power Systems (EPS) operates in the sustainable energy sector, specializing in hybrid storage solutions that enable intermittent renewable sources to be transformed into a stable power source.

Thanks to a technology covered by 125 patents and more than 10 years of R&D, the Group has developed integrated hybrid energy storage solutions to stabilize electrical grids heavily penetrated by renewable sources, and to power off-grid areas in emerging economies at a lower cost. EPS provides clean energy solutions, reducing electricity bills, without the need for any subsidy or incentive scheme.

The Group's mission is to unlock the energy transition by mastering the intermittency of renewable energy sources. By providing cutting edge systems to control the intermittency of renewables – enhanced by storage technologies – and the Group's unique hydrogen and oxygen storage platform, which enables longer autonomy without resorting to diesel or gas fuelled generators, the Group's technologies enable communities to be powered by renewable energies 24/7 more cleanly and less expensively.

EPS is listed on the French regulated market, Euronext, is part of the CAC® Mid & Small and the CAC® All-Tradable indices and has registered offices in Paris, and research, development and manufacturing in Italy.

The Group has installed and has under commissioning in aggregate more than 10.5 MW of energy storage systems grid connected, 8.6 MW of Hybrid Power Plants powered by renewables and energy storage, and 3 MW of hybrid systems with hydrogen, for an aggregate output of 46.2 MWh and 22.1 MW in 21 countries worldwide, including in Europe, United States, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
