“We are very happy to replace the legacy core network, and adopt the future-oriented Huawei core
network. Huawei has shown its ability to serve the leading European operators and its high quality ontime
handover capability, KPN and Telfort will get benefits from it.”

KPN Telecom N.V. is the largest mobile and fixed network operator in Holland
and one of the world's top 500 enterprises, ranking the 16th among
global operators. KPN possesses mobile networks in Germany and Belgium,
and the largest Pan-European optical fiber network covering the entire
Western Europe. With its turnover ranking as the 7th in Europe, KPN is
granted one of the top 10 investment-worthy telecom operators in the
world.
KPN demands network transformation urgently in the face of the 3G
trend.
KPN has always been active in the European market. It acquired Telfort, the
3rd largest mobile operator in the Netherlands in 2005, after which KPN has
four mobile networks. Along with market share growth, came a string of
tough problems: KPN had to pay for the huge operation cost brought by
the four networks. In order to reduce risks and increase investment returns,
KPN was in urgent need of network integration and optimization. Meanwhile,
in the face of the 3G trend, KPN urgently needed network transformation
to meet the market demands and technology evolvement requirements and
got ready for the arrival of 3G.
Huawei mobile softswitch assists KPN in All-IP network transformation.
In February 2006, Huawei signed a commercial WCDMA contract with KPN
and became the sole core network supplier of KPN in the Netherland. The
contract includes a full set of CS domain and PS domain equipment. The CS
domain adopts the advanced IP MPLS-based R4 mobile softswitch solution
and supports 2G/3G convergence, thus simplifying the architecture of mobile
networks and lowering the overall operation cost.
In view of Huawei's excellent performance in the mobile core network field,
KPN abandoned all the legacy equipments and turned to Huawei for
cooperation. With Huawei's help, KPN successfully integrated the acquired
Telfort network and its own G/W network into one. This new network
applies All-IP and distributed networking whose architecture is more
simplified. Thus transportation and overall operation costs are under effective
control.
