Fidel Pavlenko, head of new Ukrainian language service at euronews

euronews will broadcast a 100% Ukrainian version starting on 24 August 2011, with a dedicated team of nearly 20 journalists.

Lyon, France 8 July 2011 - Fidel Pavlenko, age 48, has been appointed Head of the Ukrainian language service at euronews. He is responsible for building and supervising a team of 16 journalists who will soon join the newsroom in preparation of the launch of the channel's 11th language.

Fidel Pavlenko, a British journalist of Ukrainian origin, graduated from the National University of Kiev and the journalism school of the BBC. He speaks Ukrainian, English, Russian and German.

Before joining euronews, Fidel was a producer for the Ukrainian section of the BBC in London, since 1995. He also was the London-based correspondent for the Ukrainian daily sports newspaper, Sportyvna Gazeta. He started his career in public relations for the Ukrainian office of the Canadian company, Country Squire International Corporation, and for the Trade Union Federation in Kiev. Fidel was also a translator-interpreter for various organisations in Yemen, the former USSR and in Kiev.

euronews in Ukrainian

The launch of the euronews Ukrainian language service is the result of an agreement signed in October 2010 by euronews and NTU, the national television broadcaster of the Ukraine. The new language service will start on 24 August 2011, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on the air and on all of euronews??? multimedia platforms. The new service targets the Ukrainian market as well as the entire Ukrainian community around the world.

Ukrainian will become the 11th round-the-clock language version of euronews, available at the same level as the other languages of euronews: Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
