Euronews posts strong results for the eighth year running, and prepares for the future

At its Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, held on Friday 24 June at RAI's offices in Rome, Euronews presented its results to the representatives of the 21 public broadcasters* that hold stakes in the channel as well as EBU membership.

The AGM, chaired by Pier Luigi Malesani, Chairman of Euronews' Supervisory Board, approved the 2010 accounts, which showed a substantial profit. Euronews will pay its shareholders a dividend for the third consecutive year.

The 2010 results (operating income of €60 million, up 14% year-on-year, and 10% headcount growth to reach nearly 700 staff, including 400 journalists, at the end of 2010) confirm the validity of Euronews' business model and the expansion strategy embarked upon in 2008. The model's success stems from a unique, multicultural editorial offering; an exceptional penetration of the market (350 million reached households in the world); a multimedia approach focused on providing the right content at the right time; and a structural flexibility that helps the channel to innovate and adapt in a constantly-evolving news market, which is now viewed as hyper-competitive by all.

Anticipation is key in addressing the media sector's major challenges. This is why Euronews has also decided to continue with the approach it has followed in recent years, in order to support the channel's strong development and to fully equip it to meet future challenges. In this context, it has been decided that the company's governance and organisation should undergo reform in December 2011.

Meanwhile, Euronews will be run collegially by an Executive Board comprising Philippe Cayla (Chairman, in charge of external relations, in order to expand the channel's development opportunities) and Michael Peters (Managing Director, in charge of all operational management of the channel).
