Gabriella's Style

She's the most memorable woman on Harriet's Worsley's fashion journalism course, with an enthusiasm to rival any of her peers

Manuela Calascibetta meets Gabriella Borg Costanzi

On a cold and frosty morning, in the dark light of the art deco decadence that is the Wolseley café in Green Park, Gabriella Borg Costanzi is sipping her strong coffee. Her all-black skinny jeans and T-shirt outfit is set off by her shimmering, golden chunky necklace, which brings a sparkle to her eyes. Her dark grey bouclé jacket makes her matte orange lipstick stand out. Her white Converse trainers are the only element to make this outfit slightly too casual for the venue. But Gabriella doesn't seem to notice.

As someone who moved out of her family home aged 16 to follow her dreams and moved into a crowded house share of dancers and performers, not much can shake her. Presentation in that world was key, looking good her mantra. This was her first introduction to fashion, her way in through the main door of extravagant and exaggerated looks, emulating high fashion and catwalk makeup. "Despite my background, I never seemed to be influenced by what famous celebrities or pop stars used to wear. I was the kind of teenager that wears whatever she likes, and decides what suits her (and what doesn't) from the start."

Did Gabriella ever wear something that makes her cringe now? "Oh God! A few years ago I used to wear this hideous outfit: a stripy black and white jumper mini dress, a big, brown belt and cow boy boots! People said I looked great in it so I kept wearing it. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have." Despite this faux pas, her favourite label is the biggest French fashion house to date: "Nobody does understated classic like Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld is a genius. I love the signature monochrome and the accessories: Chanel's chic allure is unbeatable to me." It comes as no surprise, then, that the single thing she would never leave the house without is an eye-catching accessory to add character to an outfit: a colourful scarf, or a great necklace to put the accent on, is all her streamlined, clean-cut outfits need to come to life.

Her fashion pet hate? "I genuinely can't stand it when people don't dress for their body shape. It just looks terrible", she exclaims, rolling her eyes. Her chat is done half by her talking and the other half by her movements: her arms move profusely and her face changes into a thousand different nuances that give away her enthusiasm for seemingly everything she talks about. Gabriella is certainly greatly charismatic, and it is clear that nothing will stand in the way of anything she sets to achieve in her fashion career: her experience and knowledge are already her best assets.
