Euronews Interview Peter Praet ECB Chief Economist |
Maithreyi Seetharaman, Euronews, meets Peter Praet ahead of the ECB meeting on June 5.
On ECB's monetary policy relating to the Eurozone
"We will have to face relatively long period of subdued price pressure, related to weak economy, moderate growth and fragile growth."
Peter Praet explains why the ECB has been taking "a accommodative monetary policy"
"The context we have now is a more structural sort of pressure on prices which is a result of slack in the economy and so we have been taking accommodative monetary policy. We have done that for example by communicating our assessment about the situation by saying we will have to face relatively long period of subdued price pressure, related to weak economy, moderate growth and fragile growth and we have reacted of course by using our tools - Monetary policy is the interest rates close to zero, but also other tools that we have put in place."
On divergence across the Eurozone
"We have a lot of issues related to what we now call design flaws in the construction in the Eurozone. We have to address them. We are doing that and the banking union is one part of the solution."
